iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro: Apple's first 2nm phone chip adds a seventh GPU core and doubles the Neural Engine
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max ship September 18 with the A20 Pro chip: 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine, C2 modem, a variable-aperture camera and a new 2TB tier.
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Pre-orders open September 12 and availability begins September 18, at $1,199 and $1,299 in the US. The release is written for a launch audience, so this piece does what it does not: set the 18 Pro tech specs next to Apple's own 17 Pro tech specs and read the deltas.
The chip
"Built using the latest 2-nanometer process technology, A20 Pro sets a new bar for mobile computing." That is the process claim in full. Apple's M6 release of August 25 called M6 "Apple's first state-of-the-art 2-nanometer chip", so the A20 Pro is the first iPhone part on the node, two weeks behind the Mac.
The core counts, from the two spec pages:
| | A19 Pro (iPhone 17 Pro) | A20 Pro (iPhone 18 Pro) | |---|---|---| | CPU | 6-core, 2 performance + 4 efficiency | 6-core, 2 "super cores" + 4 efficiency | | GPU | 6-core | 7-core | | Neural Engine | 16-core | Dual 16-core (32 total) |
The CPU keeps its 2+4 layout and gains a new name for the big cores. The press release says the "new 6-core CPU features integrated Neural Accelerators and is faster than the competition" and gives no percentage against A19 Pro. The GPU gets one more core and a claim: "the new 7-core GPU design is up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro". Memory gets the largest stated jump: "Featuring 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro". And the Neural Engine doubles: "a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, which accelerates on-device AI models and computational photography, and includes 32 total cores for double the AI processing power of A19 Pro."
What is absent is the same as every year. No clock speeds, no transistor count, no absolute bandwidth figure in GB/s, and the specs page lists storage tiers (256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and a new 2TB) but no RAM. "Faster than the competition" names no competitor and no benchmark.
Radios
The cellular modem is "C2, Apple's next-generation cellular modem system". The comparison Apple offers is against its own previous part: "C2 delivers meaningfully faster uploads when compared to C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy". "Meaningfully" is not a number. The specs page lists 4x4 MIMO for 5G and LTE.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are unchanged on paper: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 on both generations, now on a chip Apple names N1. So is the port. Both spec pages list "USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s)". A 2TB phone still offloads at 10Gb/s.
Camera and battery
The main camera moves from a fixed ƒ/1.78 on the 17 Pro to a variable aperture with four listed stops: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0, behind "Six laser-cut blades". The sensor is listed at 48MP.
Video playback, Apple's standing battery metric, goes from "Up to 33 hours" on the 17 Pro to "Up to 36 hours" on the 18 Pro and "Up to 45 hours" on the 18 Pro Max. Weight goes up with it: 7.44 oz for the 18 Pro against 7.27 oz for the 17 Pro. Apple says the 18 Pro "can also charge up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes" on a wire, with no wattage stated.
The displays are 6.3 inches at 2622 by 1206 and 6.9 inches at 2868 by 1320, both 460 ppi, ProMotion to 120Hz, 1600 nits HDR peak and 3000 nits outdoor peak.
What to take from it
Read as a spec sheet rather than a keynote, the A20 Pro generation is a process shrink spent on three things: one more GPU core, twice the Neural Engine, and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. The CPU core count did not move, and Apple published no CPU number against its own previous chip. Everything else a technical buyer touches, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, USB at 10Gb/s, reads the same as last year.
